Kenmore Cannister Vacuum 116.28014700 will not turn off without unplugging. The Control Unit appears to shut off (all lights go out) but vacuum remains runnin

Kenmore Cannister Vacuum 116.28014700. Have looked at parts but am not sure if I need a new Control Unit (think not) or a power control board or a "Pcb" which looks like a power relay.

I suspect the switch in the handle has failed. You will need to replace the power control in the handle. It cost approximately $66 dollars. I assume when the handle is removed the vacuum shuts off. The information may be helpful to you in completing this project. Remember to unplug the unit first. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

I was thinking the power control board as well. I had another reference to an older post with the same problem suggesting it was suction motor control in the cannister. (KC96PDDVZC0E for about $42.00). Any thoughts from Fred on this??

One way to be sure is to disconnect the 3 wire connector shown in the image below. If the unit still runs then replace the PCB "A" board. If it doesn't run then replace the PCB "B" board.

Fred, I am appreciating your help. Double checking before I order. I am using the parts diagram from Kenmore. I unplug CN4 and still runs. I unplug CN1 and it doesn't run - this looks like the power supply to the cannister. It looks like I need to get a whole new control board which includes A and B - part 10 on my diagram which is the Power Control Board PART NUMBER: KC89VDDUZ000 which is listed for $103.05. Does this sound correct?

That would be correct.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
