PRO-FORM 585 TL TREADMILL WON'T DECLINE

Second hand treadmill, Pro-Form 585 TL, stuck in the incline position. Took off Hood and saw the the red (down) and black (up) leads were both disconnected. Connected them, plugged in the unit and it hummed loudly as the wheel on the motor spinned but no incline adjustment up or down. Unplugged the black lead, plugged the unit back in and the rocker switch "up" worked fine, lifting the unit. Unplugged the red lead, plugged back in the black lead, plugged in the unit and it hummed loudly again, without even touching the rocker switch. What gives??

With the Treadmill not working properly can be quite frustrating. I have taken the time to research on the Manage My life website and have located similar information towards your issue. While you are waiting for a detailed reply from an expert I have attached the link below. Hope this helps!

I am assuming when you connected the red wire and disconnected the black wire the motor tried to run up when you pressed the incline up button. When you connected the black wire with the red wire disconnected the loud hum occurred without the incline down button being pressed.

This could be caused by a bad console or bad motor controller. More than likely the problem will be a shorted wire in the harness between the controller and the console. I would disconnect the 8 wire harness from the console and the controller. Test each wire for continuity end to end. Test each wire for continuity between each of the other wires. You should have continuity end to end. You should not have any continuity between any of the wires.

If you have questions, reply on this thread and I will be glad to help.

I am having the exact same problem and I am not an electrician so I don't really understand the experts (Jimmy K's) advice. Is there a way to explain it so that someone with limited knowledge of wiring can fix the problem?

I suggest you get a volt/ohm meter and test the wires in the wire harness between the motor controller and the console. Disconnect the harness from the console and also from the motor controller. Set the volt/ohm meter on ohms and touch one meter lead to the wire at the console connector and the other meter lead to the same wire in the controller connector. You should read 0-2 ohms. If you read higher ohms, the wire is broken or damaged. Test each of the 8 wires in the harness this way. If the wires test good, connect one meter lead to one end of a wire and touch each of the other wires with the other meter lead. If you read resistance between any 2 wires in the harness, the wires are shorted together. This is what I suspect you will find. I hope this helps.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
